Datura is a warmth germinator, i.e. it needs certain temperatures to start growing. Therefore, it is currently mainly found in the warm lowlands of northern Burgenland and eastern Lower Austria. Besides agricultural areas, the species can be found on garbage dumps, compost heaps, urban fallows or abandoned gardens.
In the course of climate change, the datura is advancing further and further to the west. In recent years, occurrences have been observed in southeastern Styria and in Upper Austria. For Carinthia there are only isolated records in fields. Further in the west it is (still) too cold for the datura.
