With the focus action, dried soups (instant soups, "Packerlsuppen") were checked for treatment with ionizing radiation".

21 samples from all over Austria were examined. 2 samples were rejected:

• irradiation was detectable in two samples (origin Japan). One of these samples contained herbs for which ionizing irradiation is permitted, however, the corresponding notice was missing.

In Austria, only "dried aromatic herbs and spices" may be treated with ionizing radiation. Any irradiated food product containing one or more irradiated ingredients must be labeled with the words "irradiated" or "treated with ionizing radiation." If an irradiated product is used as an ingredient in a compound food, the same statement must be added to its name in the list of ingredients.
