The Usutu virus was first detected in Austria in 2001 in the context of bird mortality. It mainly affected blackbirds and tawny owls. The first Usutu virus infections in humans in Europe were also reported in Austria in 2003, including in a young man with a rash from the Vienna area. Usutu virus infections in birds have been occurring more frequently in Austria again since 2016. More infections are also being recorded in other European countries.
Transmission occurs through mosquito bites. Human infection with Usutu virus usually occurs without any signs of illness, which is why it usually goes undetected. Mild symptoms such as fever and skin rash are occasionally observed. However, Usutu virus can lead to serious neurological disorders in people who are immunocompromised.
