Final Report of Priority Action A-004-22

The aim of the focus action was, on the one hand, to check hydroalcoholic products (e.g. hand gels) for the correct classification as cosmetic products and, on the other hand, to check the methanol content in these products.

57 samples from all over Austria were examined. 27 samples were objected to, some of them several times:

  • 22 samples were objected to as products pretending to have characteristics they do not possess.
  • Five samples were not notified in the CPNP database (Cosmetic Products Notification Portal of the EU).
  • For six samples, the labeling was objectionable due to the inventory list or the shelf life indication.
  • In the case of one product, the safety assessment was objected to, as the unsafe use of 12% methanol could be proven.

Methanol was detected in two samples. These contents were harmless to health.
