Listeria and mold in cheese that is sliced and packaged in retail stores

Final report of the priority action A-802-17

The aim of the focus action was to check the information on the best-before date for cheese sliced and packaged in retail outlets. For this purpose, the samples were examined both immediately after receipt at AGES and after storage until the stated best-before date. In addition, the hygiene status of the products was determined with regard to contamination with bacteria of the genus Listeria monocytogenes and with molds. 136 samples from all over Austria were examined. 14 samples were rejected:

  • Seven samples because of mold
  • One sample because of hygiene deficiencies due to excessive storage temperature
  • Six samples due to deficiencies in labeling

Listeria monocytogenes was not detected in any sample.
