The aim of the focal action was to survey the presence of hepatitis E virus in raw pork liver from Austrian retail outlets.
84 samples from all over Austria were examined.
- Hepatitis E viruses (HEV) were not detected in any of the samples.
Domestic and wild pigs play a major role in the transmission of hepatitis E viruses to humans in the European region, although the animals themselves do not become ill. Human infection usually occurs via contaminated food. Human-to-human transmission does not occur.
