Meat from third countries was tested for irradiation with ionizing radiation for the first time in this focal action. In addition, the samples were subjected to an examination for veterinary drugs. 26 samples from all over Austria were examined. No sample was rejected. Irradiation with ionizing radiation for the preservation of foodstuffs is only permitted in Austria for dried aromatic herbs and spices. They must be labeled "irradiated" or "treated with ionizing radiation". The irradiation of other foodstuffs and the placing on the market of any other irradiated foodstuffs are prohibited in Austria.
