For planned exposure situations, i.e. at least one employee with a radon dose greater than 6 mSv/a, a Radon Protection Officer (RnSchB) must be appointed in accordance with the Radiation Protection Act 2020 § 84. In April 2023, AGES GmbH was recognised by the Ministry of Climate Protection as the first training centre for radon protection officers in Austria. The courses are run by the AGES Academy together with experts from the Radon and Radioecology Department of the Radiation Protection Division.

The main tasks of the radon protection officer are defined in StrSchG 2020 § 84 (4) as follows

The radon protection officer shall

  • advise the person in charge (of the company concerned) on issues relating to radon protection
  • participate in the implementation of the necessary radon protection measures and supervise compliance with them, and
  • inform the responsible person immediately of any deficiencies in radon protection that are identified and make suggestions for their rectification.

Contents

The training of radon protection officers includes the following topics:

  • Basic concepts (what is radon, mode of action, occurrence, principles of protection against radon);
  • Legal basis (Radiation Protection Act, Radon Protection Ordinance);
  • Tasks of the radon protection officer;
  • Carrying out spatial radon measurements (passive and active measuring devices);
  • Carrying out personal radon measurements (personal dosimetry);
  • Radon exposure of workers;
  • Radon protection measures (structural measures, operational measures);
  • Information on new surveys in accordance with § 9;
  • Instructions on how to instruct workers.

Target group

Radon protection officers can be representatives from the following areas:

  • Employees of companies that are obliged under the Radiation Protection Act 2020 § 84 to appoint a radon protection officer or to consult one externally
  • Civil engineers, tradespeople, employees of relevant specialist companies, consultants or freelancers who wish to offer the advisory services of a radon protection officer as part of their portfolio
  • Employees of municipalities in which companies are located who need to consult a radon protection officer

Successful course graduates can be entered in the "List of Radon Protection Officers" (to be found on www.radon.gv.at in future).
