Final Report of Priority Action A-700-22

The aim of the focus action was to determine the healthiness of home-produced food. In the microbiological parameters, pathogenic germs (Bacillus cereus, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes) were examined in addition to spoilage and hygiene indicator germs(mesophilic aerobic germs, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, coagulase-positive Staphylococci and Pseudomonads). In the case of packaged goods, the labeling was also checked.

1,463 samples from all over Austria were examined. 73 samples were rejected:

  • Five samples as harmful to health: one sample due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, in four samples the germ contents of presumptive Bacillus cereus were too high.
  • Seven samples were considered unsuitable for human consumption/intended use because the germ contents of hygiene indicators and spoilage agents were very high, respectively
  • In 23 samples, the levels of Enterobacteriaceae, mesophilic aerobic germs and pseudomonads were slightly elevated
  • In two samples, the value of the hygiene indicator germ Escherichia coli was too high due to deviations from storage temperatures; in another two samples, the germ contents of Enterobacteriaceae were elevated directly after production
  • One sample due to missing information on allergens
  • In the case of pre-packaged goods, labeling deficiencies were found in a total of 35 samples.
