The aim of the focus campaign was to check products advertised specifically for children. Particular attention was paid to unauthorised substances such as heavy metals and other contaminants as well as prohibited substances and incorrectly declared or undeclared ingredients (preservatives, allergenic fragrances, colourings).
36 samples from all over Austria were analysed. Nine samples were rejected:
- An elevated cadmium level was detected in a set of green glitter make-up.
- Banned substances (styrene and N-methylpyrrolidone) were detected in low concentrations in a nail polish set.
- Two unauthorised colourants (basic violet 10 and 11:1) were detected and the preservative methylisothiazolinone (MI) may not be used in a nail polish.
- An unauthorised preservative benzisothiazolinone (BIT) was also detected in a nail polish set, an authorised preservative (chlorphenesin) was not declared and the nail polish set was not notified.
- The allergenic fragrance benzyl alcohol was not declared in a set of nail polishes. Furthermore, the age group warning symbol was printed too small.
- The remaining samples due to labelling deficiencies and lack of notification.
