The aim of the focus campaign was to review the labelling and hygiene of cosmetics that are self-filled or sold without packaging. In addition, the various ways in which manufacturers and retailers are currently saving on packaging for cosmetics and which types of self-filling are offered were analysed.
22 samples from all over Austria were analysed. Five samples were rejected:
- Three samples due to incomplete labelling: in principle, the same information must be provided to the customer for unpackaged cosmetics as for packaged ones
- One sample was labelled as "organic", but the seal or the criteria used for organic certification were missing
- A solid soap advertised with the claim "free from preservatives", although solid soaps generally do not require preservatives as they contain hardly any free water and have a high pH value
The microbiological test did not reveal any abnormalities.
