Radon (Rn-222) is a radioactive gas that occurs everywhere in the ground. Radon can penetrate buildings from the ground through cracks in the foundations or through pipes and accumulate in the indoor air. If it is inhaled over a long period of time, it can damage lung tissue. In Austria, radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer after smoking.
